Taking a break from our account of our summer, we pause in Nashville, TN, home of my sister Kathy, her husband, and their new Boston terrier, Lucy (above). Lucy is super hip. If you are hip too, unlike me, you can follow her on twitter. Or, for you luddites out there, you can just go to her website.
Nashville is probably one of my favorite places in the US. I love the green, tree-lined streets and the creative, down-home atmosphere.
If you haven't visited, you definitely should.
This visit was especially fun because I had a week off from work with nothing to do but eat. Kathy and Jeremy are fun people and recently bought a house so we stayed home most of the time enjoying their outdoor living area and grilling fish tacos. We ate them by the thousands. They were delicious.
Stefan came at the end of the
week (yay!) and we had to eat Five Guys every day until he left. Five Guys, for those of you who have not heard of it, is a no-frills burger joint; a sort of eastern seaboard version of In-'n-Out, except inferior because they don't have milkshakes. Still, VERY delicious. Check it out! We also took a trip to the Loveless Cafe for some yummy biscuits made by the famous Carol Fay.
Also worth mentioning is our favorite bakery, Dulce Desserts. The owner has a cool story. She went to Princeton for some type of boring professional degree (I can't remember exactly) and after working for a long time decided she'd had enough fun and started her own bakery. She definitely found her calling because these...

...are by far the best thing I've ever eaten. Don't ever eat them because your life will never be the same. All you will be able to think about is how long before you can have another one. :)
We went to see the fireworks on July 4th. The death of Tennessee Titans star Steve McNair cast a bit of a shadow over the city that day since it had been reported earlier that afternoon. From the bridge we were standing on the police lights were still visible at the crime scene--only a few blocks away.
But we still had a good time. As we were watching the fireworks the sky suddenly went completely black and a huge wall of pouring rain started to sweep across the bridge where we were standing. Everyone started running and screaming "we're gonna die, we're gonna die!!!"
I confess I thought we were too for about a minute; it was really scary! But then we realized how ridiculous this was and that we weren't in any real danger. By this time we were completely soaked from head to toe and--realizing that the friends we had come with had left us to fend for ourselves while they ran to safety--started laughing hysterically. It kept raining but we stayed to watch the rest of the fireworks and a group of die-hards started singing the national anthem. It was pretty exciting.
